Assessment Center: How You Are Scored and How to Pass [EN]

Most advice about assessment centres is written by people who have never sat on the scoring side. Be yourself. Show leadership. Speak up but not too much. None of it is actionable, because none of it describes what is actually being written down about you.

What is actually happening in the room

Several trained observers are filling in a form. The form lists specific competencies, each with behavioural indicators and a numeric scale. Every exercise you do was chosen to produce evidence for particular competencies, decided before you arrived. At the end the observers meet without you and reconcile their scores. Nothing about this is mysterious, and almost nothing about it is ever explained to candidates.

What this course actually covers

Six blocks, following the process you go through but seen from the other side. First, the assessment centre itself: how it is designed, how exercises are matched to competencies, how observers are trained, what the day looks like from the front of the room, and what happens in the discussion afterwards. Second, competency interviews: how your profile was built before you arrived, the formats used, CARE and STAR as the structure being listened for, the rating scale, and how an interviewer checks whether an example is genuine. Third, personality typologies — six frameworks, so you know what a test measures and why answering strategically shows. Fourth, the screening that got you there: how a CV is read, what counts as a red flag, and how a rehearsed answer is spotted. Fifth, the group exercise from the facilitator's chair — how dominance and silence are both read. Sixth, scoring, bias control, documentation, and the limits on what feedback you can be given.

Why the course is taught from the assessor's side

Because that is the only version of this information that helps. Every lesson here was recorded for the people who design and run these processes. You are getting the competency matrix, the observer report form, the rating scale and the calibration discussion. Preparing against those is a different activity from rehearsing answers, and it is the reason this course exists.
