Course Description

This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.

Freelance income is arithmetic. Rate multiplied by hours. You have a finite number of hours and most of them are already sold.

What actually limits a freelance income

Not effort. You are already working the evenings. The rate has not moved in two years because raising it means a conversation you would rather not have, and because privately you are not certain you are worth more — which is the specific trap: the people most likely to underprice are the ones who know exactly what they do not know yet. Meanwhile a meaningful share of your week is unpaid — proposals that go nowhere, admin, a client who was never going to sign — and none of it is visible because nobody sends you an invoice for your own time. From there the only remaining move is to work more, which is the one thing that cannot scale.

What this course covers

Forty-three lessons across the three moves that actually exist. Raising the rate first: what impostor syndrome really is and why it selects for competent people, the "this comes too easily to me" trap, what market value is made of and whether you can move it, whether it is possible to undersell yourself, standing on three income sources rather than one, and turning knowledge into something people pay for. Then direction: the practice that would not exhaust you, talents and values, the career cube, a capability audit with the balance wheel, the softer capabilities that actually gate independent work, finding out what the market pays before you quote, financial planning for yourself, and burnout recovery. Then positioning: the six brand layers at one-person scale, an audit of how you are described today including by the language models, the positioning formula, a messaging matrix, tone of voice, and monitoring. Then winning work: AIDA and SPIN, the value proposition canvas, acquisition channels, BANT qualification, the five-touch sequence, objections handled with LAER and Feel-Felt-Found, closing, and the numbers that tell you whether your pipeline works. Then the hours: auditing where the week goes, the Eisenhower matrix, do-defer-delegate-delete, time blocking, the golden hour, and procrastination. Finally the move most freelancers never make — building a financial model, finding where value leaks, metrics across four dimensions, and designing something that scales past your own calendar.

A note on two blocks

The direction block was recorded from a career coach's side, so the tools — the balance wheel, the career cube, the capability audit, the financial plan, burnout diagnosis — are described as things you do with a client. Apply them to yourself; the pronouns are the only thing that changes. The final block was recorded about companies rather than individuals, and that is deliberate: the question "how do I stop selling hours" is a business model question, and it needs the vocabulary of one.

Who is teaching this

I am Mike Pritula. I built the people system at Preply as it became a unicorn, and I have worked at Wargaming, iDeals and Alfa-Bank. More than 1.6 million students have enrolled in my courses across 185 countries, and over 150,000 specialists have gone through my programmes. I hold PHRi and SHRM-CP certifications and represent HRCI in more than ten countries.

Who this course is for:

  • Freelancers whose income has been flat for two years while the work grew
  • Independent specialists charging by the hour and running out of hours
  • People going independent from employment for the first time
